Watching a pro adjust or install a new door is pure poetry to those of who repair and repurpose old funky junk with doors: funky old cabinets, sideboards and the like.

It's what they know that makes it look so darn easy!  Here is what they know . . . that you might not:

• Shim at the top = out at the bottom.
• Shim the bottom = out at the top.

All you need to shim a door is a piece of cardboard (plain, not corrugated) or very thin wood shims.

Simply:

1.  Loosen the cabinet door hinge.

2.  Place a piece of cardboard or a thin wood shim under the hinge.

3.  Cut the shim to fit behind the hinge.

4.  Place shim under the hinge and tighten hinge screws.

5.  Test your shim . . . by opening and closing the door several times.

Fixed? Great! Not fixed? Wash, rinse, repeat until the thickness of the shim makes your cabinet door level, plum and open and close with ease.

That’s it. Your funky junk’s doors will appreciate your attention to detail and you now know how to adjust that interior door of your house that catches at the top when you close it . . . kick out the bottom hinge with a shim!
