Pearls: Real or Manufactured?

Here's a little pearl!   A strand of pearls . . . simple, elegant . . . but how do you know if the strand of pearls you are holding ifunky junk show, funky junkn your hand are real pearls or really good imitations?

Take one pearl and rub it across your front teeth . . . does it feel gritty, sandy?

Yes! They are pearls.

No . . . they might be pretty and excellent quality . . . but they were manufactured in something other than an oyster shell.
